Administration
Even with the reunification of Hong Kong and
Macao, so that the three core elements of
the GPRD are parts of China, they are separate
in terms of administration. Each is responsible
for its own policies for trade, investment,
tax, education and health etc.
They operate separate currencies: Hong Kong
dollar, Mainland renminbi and Macao pataca.
With the support of the Central People’s
Government, the Government of the Hong Kong
Special Administrative Region and the People’s
Government of Guangdong are committed to working
together in developing the GPRD and presenting
it as a unified location.
In his 2004 policy address, Hong Kong Chief
Executive Tung Chee Hwa said “Regional
co-operation, especially recent progress in
developing closer links with Guangdong…
offers Hong Kong greater integrated advantages
resulting from an expanded economic hinterland.”
As stated by Guangdong Governor Huang Huahua, the cooperation between Guandong and Hong Kong is becoming more and more comprehensive, creating unlimited opportunities for business and extensive horizons to explore. Guangdong will certainly continue to leverage off the competitive advantages of Hong Kong to strengthen its position as the centre of production of the world. On the other hand, Hong Kong will continue to take advantage of its natural hinterland of the Mainland to position itself as the gateway to and from the Mainland and as the international hub of finance, logistics and communicatiosn. Under the joint effort of Guangdong and Hong Kong, it is anticipated that the GPRD will ultimately become one of the most prosperous and dynamic business regions in the world.
