Transportation and connectivity
Looking to the broader GPRD, through years
of continuous investment and development
in infrastructure, the GPRD enjoys a comprehensive
and reliable transportation and commuting
network comprising of airports, railways,
ports, highways and waterways.
Airports: There are 5 airports
in the GPRD, including the Hong Kong International
Airport, which is rated one of the best
airports in the world for civilian and air-freight
transport, and the Guangzhou Baiyun International
Airport, which serves as the centre for
major domestic freight in the Mainland.
All these airports work closely together.
Railway system: Many of
the key rail arteries in China, such as
the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway and the Beijing-Kowloon
Railway, start in the GPRD. Inside the region,
through-train express services connecting
Guangzhou and Hong Kong operate, and an
inter-cities express rail transport system
is planned.
Port facilities: There
are a number of natural deep-water harbours
and the world’s busiest container
ports in the GPRD, including the Kwai Chung
Container Terminals in Hong Kong, the Yantien
Port in Shenzhen, the Huangpu Port and Nansha
Port of Guangzhou, etc. Port charges are
recognized as being some of the most competitive
in the world.
Highways: All major cities
in the GPRD are linked by highways, and
the highway network is rapidly expanding.
Projects in progress, such as the Shenzhen
Western Corridor and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-macao
Link, will further connect Hong Kong and
Macao with the Pearl River Delta by land.
Due to the collaborative economic development
in the GPRD, the three administrations are
successfully cooperating on large scale
infrastructure constructions. The continuous
improvement in infrastructure has created
a better foundation for the merging of economic
regions of the GPRD and additionally meets
the ever-increasing demand on logistics
services induced by trade development.
Work is underway to link the jurisdictions
even more directly through two initiatives:
- the Shenzhen Western Corridor and Deep
Bay Link connecting Hong Kong and Shekou
is scheduled to be completed in 2005/06
- a bridge will be built to link Hong Kong
with Zhuhai and Macao
