Urban Economies with Various Characteristics
Through many years’ efforts, the
21 cities within the administrative division
of Guangdong Province have developed their
own dominant industries with comparative
advantages, together forming some metropolitan
clusters with unique favorable features,
that is, the Pearl River Delta cluster,
the west cluster, the east cluster, and
the mountainous cluster in North GD. With
Guangzhou at its center, the Pearl River
cluster including Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Dongguan,
Foshan, Jiangmen, Huizhou, Zhongshan, Zhaoqing
and etc. has a sharp competitive edge even
on a nation-wide basis, with its strong
absorbing effect and radiating influence.
The other clusters, located in the hinterland
of Guangdong, are rich in natural resources.
As a result, industries there are low in
production cost. In addition, favorable
policies are carried out by the Guangdong
government to urge foreign investment in
these clusters. The east cluster comprises
Shantou, Shanwei, Chaozhou and Jieyang,
the west cluster Yangjiang, Zhanjiang and
Maoming, and the mountainous cluster Shaoguan,
Heyuan, Meizhou, Qingyuan and Yunfu.
